BLADDER BOTOX ®

AN ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT FOR BLADDER CONDITIONS

BLADDER BOTOX ®

Bladder BOTOX ® is the next level of treatment for patients who have tried behavioral therapy, medications, and pelvic floor rehabilitation. The goal of bladder BOTOX® therapy is to decrease urinary incontinence and frequency, improve bladder control, and relieve bladder spasms to restore quality of life for men and women who suffer from overactive bladder, urinary incontinence, or urge incontinence.

BOTOX® injections are used in a variety of medical treatments, from cosmetic dermatology to treatment for migraines. BOTOX® is an FDA-approved treatment that uses Botulinum A toxin to temporarily paralyze muscles. In urology, BOTOX® is a widely accepted treatment option for patients with overactive bladder and urinary incontinence, and Blue Ridge Urological offers bladder BOTOX®therapy right here in our office under local anesthetic.

BLADDER BOTOX

HOW DOES BLADDER BOTOX® WORK?

BOTOX® is a derivative of botulinum toxin, which is used to temporarily weaken or paralyze muscles and prevent them from contracting. When the bladder muscles are in a more relaxed state, you will be able to get to the bathroom when you need to urinate. This therapy is particularly helpful in treating spastic bladder, overactive bladder and urinary incontinence.

During the procedure, a local anesthetic is placed in the bladder through a catheter to numb the lining of the bladder. Once the numbing agent has taken effect, a small scope with a camera is inserted into the bladder through the urethra, and your doctor will administer a series of bladder BOTOX® injections into the muscle of the bladder. Bladder BOTOX treatment is a well-tolerated therapy for treating moderate to severe cases of overactive or spastic bladder and the treatment usually lasts for 6-8 months before the next injections are needed. Most patients begin to experience relief from bladder symptoms as early as one week after injection treatment.

BENEFITS OF BLADDER BOTOX ®

Many patients express that bladder BOTOX® therapy is a life-changing treatment option for overactive bladder and urinary incontinence. Some of the many benefits of bladder BOTOX ® therapy include:

  • Safe and effective treatment to manage an overactive bladder and urgency urinary incontinence

  • Lasts 6 months to a year before repeat treatment is needed

  • Consistent effect over time

  • Improves quality of life

  • Significant drop in daily incontinence episodes

  • Minimal side effects

If you have moderate to severe symptoms of overactive bladder or urinary incontinence, Blue Ridge Urological can help. Before receiving bladder BOTOX® therapy, one of our board-certified urologists will explain how the Botox treatment is administered and what you can expect during the procedure. You will receive an antibiotic to start 1 to 3 days prior to treatment to prevent a urinary tract infection. On the day of the procedure, we will make sure that you do not have a urinary tract infection (UTI) and numb the bladder with a local anesthetic. The doctor will use a cystoscope to place small injections of Botox into the bladder wall. After the procedure, you will be scheduled for a follow-up visit to evaluate your progress and determine when the next treatment is needed. While urinary retention is a possible side effect, it is very rare.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is bladder Botox and how does it work?

Bladder Botox refers to the use of botulinum toxin injections to treat overactive bladder (OAB) and urinary incontinence. The botulinum toxin works by blocking nerve signals that cause the bladder muscles to contract too frequently. By relaxing these muscles, Botox reduces urinary urgency, frequency, and incontinence episodes, allowing for improved bladder control. This treatment is typically recommended for patients who have not responded adequately to other medications or therapies.

What can I expect during the bladder Botox procedure?

The bladder Botox procedure is usually performed in a healthcare providers office under local anesthesia. A local anesthetic gel is applied to the urethra to numb the area before a thin tube called a cystoscope is inserted into the bladder. Through this scope, multiple small injections of Botox are administered directly into the bladder wall muscle. The entire procedure typically takes about 30 minutes, and most patients can go home shortly after without needing an overnight stay.

How long do the effects of bladder Botox last?

The effects of bladder Botox are not permanent and typically last between six to twelve months, with an average duration of about 7.5 months. As the effects wear off, patients may experience a return of their original symptoms. It is important for patients to discuss follow-up treatments with their healthcare provider to maintain symptom relief, as repeat injections will be necessary once the benefits diminish.

What are the potential side effects of bladder Botox?

While bladder Botox is generally considered safe, some potential side effects can occur. Common side effects include urinary tract infections (UTIs), temporary difficulty urinating or urinary retention (inability to completely empty the bladder), and mild burning sensations during urination. In some cases, patients may experience light bleeding in their urine. Most side effects are temporary and resolve within a few days, but it’s essential to communicate any persistent issues with your healthcare provider.

Who is a good candidate for bladder Botox treatment?

Bladder Botox treatment is typically recommended for individuals with overactive bladder who have not found relief from other treatments, such as anticholinergic medications or behavioral therapies. Candidates may include those experiencing significant urinary urgency, frequency, and incontinence that affect their quality of life. It’s important for patients to have a thorough evaluation by a healthcare provider to determine if they are suitable candidates for this treatment based on their medical history and specific symptoms.
