HOW DOES REZUM™ WORK?

Rezum ™ Water Vapor Therapy uses the natural energy stored in water vapor to shrink the prostate tissue. A small instrument is inserted into the urethra and, in 9-second intervals, water vapor or steam is released into the target prostate tissue. When the steam turns back into the water, the stored energy is released causing the cells of the prostate to die. Over a short amount of time, the body’s natural healing process will absorb the dead cells in the prostate allowing the urethra to open and the symptoms of enlarged prostate are alleviated. Most patients experience relief of symptoms within 2 weeks of the procedure. The full benefits of the procedure are usually realized within 3 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Rezum water vapor therapy?

Rezum water vapor therapy is a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as an enlarged prostate. The procedure uses the natural energy stored in water vapor (steam) to destroy excess prostate tissue that is causing urinary symptoms. During the treatment, sterile water vapor is delivered into the targeted areas of the prostate, where it releases thermal energy, leading to cell necrosis and gradual absorption of the treated tissue by the body.

How does the Rezum procedure work?

The Rezum procedure involves a series of short, nine-second treatments where water vapor is injected directly into the prostate tissue through a specialized device inserted via the urethra. The steam travels between cells and releases heat upon contact with the prostate tissue, effectively reducing the volume of the prostate while preserving surrounding tissues. This targeted approach helps alleviate symptoms such as frequent urination and difficulty urinating without requiring major surgery or incisions.

What are the benefits of Rezum water vapor therapy compared to other treatments for BPH?

Rezum offers several benefits over traditional BPH treatments, including: Minimally Invasive: The procedure can be performed in an outpatient setting without general anesthesia, resulting in less recovery time. Preservation of Sexual Function: Unlike some surgical options, Rezum typically preserves erectile function and ejaculation. Quick Symptom Relief: Many patients begin to notice improvement in their urinary symptoms within two weeks, with maximum benefits usually achieved within three months. Low Surgical Retreat Rate: Clinical studies indicate that only a small percentage of patients require further surgical intervention after undergoing Rezum.

Are there any side effects associated with Rezum therapy?

As with any medical procedure, there are potential side effects associated with Rezum therapy. Common side effects may include painful urination (dysuria), blood in the urine (hematuria), blood in semen (hematospermia), and increased urinary frequency or urgency. These side effects are generally mild and temporary, often resolving within a few days to weeks. It’s important for patients to discuss any concerns with their healthcare provider prior to undergoing the procedure.

Who is a good candidate for Rezum water vapor therapy?

Rezum water vapor therapy is suitable for men aged 50 years and older who have been diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia and are experiencing moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms that affect their quality of life. Candidates should not have significant urinary tract infections or other contraindications that would prevent them from undergoing the procedure. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare provider is essential to determine if Rezum is the right treatment option based on individual health status and prostate size.
