MEET DR. RISENDAL
Dr. Matthew Risendal was born and raised in Virginia, and graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Prior to medical school, he performed clinical research at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. He then attended Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Davie, Florida. Upon graduation from medical school, Dr. Risendal moved to West Virginia where he completed his internship in General Surgery and his residency in Urology at the Charleston Area Medical Center. Dr. Risendal was named Chief Urology Resident during his time at Charleston Area Medical Center.
Dr. Risendal was drawn to urology because of its day-to-day variation. He enjoys tackling complex operations in the operating room some days, while other days he works with routine office procedures. His favorite part about his job is developing relationships with his patients. He loves when patients leave gratified, and as their physician, he truly feels like he gets to help improve their quality of life.
His professional interests include kidney stones, enlarged prostate/BPH, cancers of the genitourinary tract, robotic and minimally invasive surgery, female pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence and men’s sexual health. He is also trained on the DaVinci robot system to provide a minimally-invasive approach for multiple urologic conditions. Dr. Risendal served as a physician trainer in transperineal prostate needle biopsies for systematic as well as MRI-fusion prostate needle biopsies.
Dr. Risendal is married with two daughters and two dogs. In his free time, you can find him hiking with his wife and kids, golfing, fishing, following Virginia Tech sports, grilling or making pizza and spending time outside. He is very excited to be back in Virginia and loves the small-town feel and close-knit community this area has to offer, while still providing an abundance of activities.
